Mapping illicit networks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Haut-Katanga is a major mining region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, producing a significant portion of the country's copper, cobalt, uranium, zinc, and other minerals. The region is part of the Copperbelt, one of the most mineral-rich areas in Central Africa.

Lubumbashi is the capital and largest city of Haut-Katanga province. It is a major industrial and commercial centre, home to many mining companies and related industries.

Major mining companies like Gécamines, Katanga Mining Ltd, and Chinese firms operate large mining concessions in Haut-Katanga. The DRC produces over 3% of the world's copper and half its cobalt, much of which comes from the region.

Over a 100 individuals elected during the recent election in December 2023. The mapping was done using Evidencity's proprietary Illicit Network Index methodology.

A risk score based on their direct and indirect relations is determined using Evidencity's proprietary risk scoring methodology.

The DRC dataset uncovers political exposure by connecting pieces of unstructured data from reliable open sources. Evidencity highlights links and connections not easily perceived or accessible and underline areas of potential risk for the global mining supply chains.

• The representatives elected in the mining area of Lubumbashi city and Haut-Katanga province at the national and regional levels and their most important connections.
• The main political parties elected at the national and regional levels.
• Certain municipalities have elected representatives from only one party.
• Smaller political parties sometimes work as campaign organizations that rally for specific candidates that might be candidating with a larger party.
